SEO-Friendly Homepage Design: What to Put Above the Fold

Your homepage is your hardest-working page. Here is exactly what an SEO-friendly homepage needs, section by section.

SEO-Friendly Homepage Design: What to Put Above the Fold

Your homepage is almost always your most-visited page, your strongest page for links, and the page Google understands your whole site through. An SEO-friendly homepage is not about cramming in keywords — it is about clarity. Here is what it needs, section by section.

Above the fold: the five-second test

Within five seconds, a visitor should know what you do, where you do it, and what to do next. That means:

  • A single H1 that says what you do and where — not “Welcome to our website”.
  • A one-line subheading that expands on the benefit.
  • A visible call to action — quote, call or WhatsApp — without scrolling.
  • A fast-loading hero image. Compress it, size it correctly, and never lazy-load it (see image optimization).

The middle: prove it

  • Services summary — a card per service linking to its dedicated page. This is internal linking gold and helps Google map your site (see internal linking strategies).
  • Trust signals — reviews, years in business, areas served, real project photos.
  • Your locations — if you serve Kent, Maidstone, London or Surrey, say so in text. Google reads text, not implications.

Below that: depth and freshness

A short FAQ section (with FAQPage schema), a teaser of your latest guides, and a final call to action. A homepage that occasionally changes signals an active business; one frozen since 2019 signals the opposite.

Technical must-haves

  • Title tag with primary keyword and location, under 60 characters.
  • Meta description written like an advert (see meta tags explained).
  • LocalBusiness schema with address, hours and service area.
  • Phone number as a tappable tel: link on mobile.
  • Passes Core Web Vitals on a real phone over 4G.
The best SEO-friendly homepages do not look “optimised” at all — they look clear, fast and trustworthy. That is the optimisation.
