Plugins cannot do SEO for you — but the right ones remove enormous amounts of grunt work. This is the stack we recommend and configure for clients in 2026, plus the traps to avoid.
1. An SEO framework: Rank Math or Yoast
You need exactly one of these. Both handle title templates, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, canonical tags and schema markup. We lean towards Rank Math for its generous free tier and built-in schema builder; Yoast SEO remains excellent and has the gentler learning curve. Pick one, learn it, and never install both — they fight each other.
2. Caching and performance
LiteSpeed Cache (on LiteSpeed hosting) or WP Rocket (paid, superb) handle page caching, minification and lazy loading. Page speed is a confirmed ranking factor, and caching is the single biggest speed win on WordPress.
3. Image optimisation
ShortPixel or Imagify compress and convert uploads to WebP automatically. Images are usually the heaviest thing on a small business page — see our guide to image optimization for SEO for why this matters so much.
4. Redirects
The free Redirection plugin manages 301 redirects and logs 404s. Whenever you rename a page, redirect the old URL — losing existing rankings to a dead link is an own goal.
Plugins to avoid
- Anything promising “instant #1 rankings” — uninstall, walk away.
- Multiple SEO or caching plugins doing the same job.
- Abandoned plugins not updated in over a year (security and bloat risk).
- Page builders loading megabytes of scripts for a five-page brochure site.
